WHAT IS FROSÉ?

Frosé is a frozen rosé, or a blended frozen cocktail that is primarily made with rosé, sweetener and fruit, usually strawberries. There are many variations on this refreshing wine cocktail that take it from simple and subtle to flavor packed and complex. The frosé has gained popularity as a sweet summer favorite in part due to this customizability.

WHAT IS FROSÉ MADE OF?

As a contraction of the words “frozen” and “rosé,” frosé is made with rosé and frozen fruit or ice (and occasionally both) plus a sweetener. To achieve a more fruity flavor, frosé will sometimes contain multiple types of fruit including popular choices like strawberries and raspberries. Depending on the recipe, frosé may also include ingredients such as additional alcohol, like vodka, or flavoring, like lemon juice.

There are many ways to make a frosé and you can experiment to find your favorite method. The main difference in most frosé recipes is whether you blend frozen fruit and/or ice into your cocktail and serve it right away, or blend ingredients, then freeze and serve later. You can also choose to strain your blend for a smoother result, or enjoy a fuller bodied mix without straining.

FROZEN ROSÉ RECIPE

For this recipe, place the rosé, strawberries, sugar and lemon juice in a blender. Purée until the mixture reaches a smooth consistency, then strain into a baking pan. Next, put the pan into the freezer for at least six hours. Briefly blend the semi-frozen mixture again for a smooth consistency, then pour into glasses. Garnish with cut strawberries.

STEP 3: STORE AND FREEZE

Place the baking pan into the freezer and leave for at least six hours (the alcohol content will ensure that it does not fully freeze).

STEP 4: POUR AND GARNISH

Once the mixture has reached a slushy consistency, remove the baking pan from the freezer and pour the contents into your blender jar. Give it a quick blend to break up any ice crystals and achieve a consistent texture. Pour the frosé into wine glasses and garnish with cut strawberries, if desired.

TIP: ICE CREAM MAKER

If you want to speed up the process of making your frosé, attach the KitchenAid® ice cream maker attachment to your stand mixer and churn on the coldest setting for 45 minutes to one hour until you have achieved a slushy consistency.

WHAT’S THE BEST ROSÉ FOR FROSÉ?

The best rosé for frosé will often be darker-colored dry rosés because they tend to be fuller bodied and can withstand being diluted with other ingredients. Search for bottles that have been made with either grenache or syrah.

WHAT DOES FROSÉ TASTE LIKE?

A frosé tastes fruity and sweet, with dry and mildly bitter notes from the rosé wine to balance it out. Think of it like your favorite childhood slushie, all grown up. You can customize the flavor of your frosé depending on what fruits you use including strawberries, raspberries, watermelon or even lemon. You can increase the boozy flavor by adding vodka, or the sweetness by blending in agave nectar, honey or other sweeteners.

FROSÉ RECIPE ALTERNATIVES

While frosé recipes will always call for rosé and chilled fruit or ice, the taste of your frosé will vary depending on what type of fruit, herbs or other ingredients you use, and even how you incorporate them. Vary the recipe above by including watermelon, pineapple, mint, mango or peach fruits. Explore some frosé recipe alternatives below to find inspiration for your next gathering.

FROSÉ MOJITO

The flavors of frosé can be accented when you combine them with the fresh taste of mint. To create a frosé mojito, add fresh mint leaves and substitute agave in place of sugar. Blend these together with the rest of your ingredients (try watermelon as opposed to strawberries) and follow the rest of the recipe above.

FROSÉ WITH VODKA

If you love the taste of frosé but wish it had a little more of an adult punch, try adding vodka to your frosé. Adding vodka is a great option when you choose to blend whole fruits into your drink. The added fruit will balance the additional liquid and help take the edge off of the vodka.

FROSÉ MOCKTAIL

Did you know that rosé can be swapped for non-alcoholic liquids in frosé to create a refreshing frosé mocktail? To recreate the recipe above as a mocktail, replace the dark rosé wine with a non-alcoholic rosé or a juice that complements your choice of fruit.

LESS FRUITY FROSÉ

If you prefer to let the flavor of rosé shine, try creating a syrup from your fruits instead of blending them whole into your drink. In this version, you can partially freeze the rosé in a baking pan instead of using frozen fruit. To make the syrup, boil sugar and water, then remove from heat and add sliced fruit. Let it sit for half an hour, then strain the resulting mixture into a bowl. Combine the rosé and cooled fruit syrup with lemon juice and ice in the blender and purée until smooth. Place the blender jar in the freezer for thirty minutes, then blend again until the frosé achieves the consistency of a slushy.

TIPS FOR MAKING FROSÉ

  • If you are planning ahead for a gathering, frosé can be chilled and stored for up to one week ahead of time in an airtight container in your freezer.
  • To use sparkling rosé, blend and freeze all ingredients except the rosé, blend again just before serving. Add the mixture to glasses, then top it off with sparkling rosé and serve immediately.

  • Strawberries are great for flavoring frosé, but it is worth experimenting with other fruits such as melons or berries.

  • To really accentuate the fruity flavor of rosé, try adding sliced fruits to the rim of your wine glasses as a garnish.

  • You can make virgin fosés! Just replace the alcohol in your recipe with non-alcoholic substitutes, such as juice.
