HOW DOES BAKING SODA WORK TO REMOVE REFRIGERATOR ODORS?

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that can help absorb and neutralize mild odors inside the refrigerator. Adding an open box of baking soda to one of the interior shelves of the refrigerator can minimize unwanted odors. Depending on what’s causing the smell, baking soda may take up to three days to remove odors.

HOW TO USE BAKING SODA TO DEODORIZE A REFRIGERATOR

Baking soda can be a convenient solution for neutralizing unpleasant odors in the refrigerator. Keep reading to learn how this household staple can be used to help combat smells.

1. OPEN A BOX OF BAKING SODA

Check to make sure all possible sources of unpleasant odors, such as expired food or spilled liquids, have been cleaned out from your refrigerator. Then, open a new box of baking soda.

2. PUT THE BAKING SODA INSIDE THE REFRIGERATOR

Place the open box of baking soda inside the refrigerator, on one of the interior shelves. Keep the baking soda out of the way of other items to help it properly deodorize your refrigerator.

3. REPLENISH AS NEEDED

Replenish the baking soda with a new, open box as needed. Baking soda should be replaced about every three months. If odors persist, you can place an additional box of baking soda in the freezer or sprinkle loose baking soda in a large, shallow container and place it at the bottom of your refrigerator.

CAN YOU USE BAKING SODA TO DEODORIZE A FREEZER?

Just as baking soda can freshen a refrigerator, placing an open box on a shelf in your freezer can help eliminate odors. If the smell lingers, you can also try sprinkling baking soda in a shallow container and placing it in your freezer.

CAN YOU USE BAKING SODA TO CLEAN A REFRIGERATOR?

You can use a mixture of baking soda and warm water to clean areas inside a refrigerator, such as the interior shelving. Refrain from using baking soda to clean stainless steel appliances, as it can potentially damage the exterior finish. Instead, consider using cleaners that are specifically intended for use on stainless steel, such as affresh® stainless steel cleaner1, which can help clear away rust and heat-induced discoloration on your appliance.
